Thank you to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. I attended their 2012 GALA event in Calgary. Instead of feeling like it was the club ‘my Dad used to belong to’ I was surrounded by an innovative, connected group of people. Adam Legge and his board of directors have successfully brought change into the Chamber of Commerce. I was fortunate, that night, to hear Shawn Achor speak on happiness in life and the workplace. I located his talk on Tedtalk and wanted to share it. Please take the time to listen to it.

1. Know What’s Newsworthy

Before you begin pitching your startup, stop to think about what is truly newsworthy, especially to the publications you’re targeting.

Sadly, many startups simply aren’t newsworthy, because they aren’t unique or don’t offer any added value beyond their existing competitors. If your startup is in that boat, it’s really not a matter of figuring out how to pitch your company — instead, you may want to consider improving your product before hitting the pavement.

That being said, if you feel your startup is unique and worthy of coverage, figure out the right angle with which to approach a journalist. A few common ideas include:

The startup’s launch

The launch of a new product, feature or offering

The release of a compelling study or interesting data

The company’s response to a current event

News of a high profile partnership

Once you figure out what qualifies as newsworthy, begin crafting your message by first understanding all of the details about what you’re pitching.

Hello all you post Christmas dieters, vegetarians, healthy eaters. I came across this recipe and made it tonight. I am super fussy and really enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, a great big burger was on my mind but with Christmas still ‘hanging’ around I have to make a few changes to my diet for the next little while.

I also like this because I am really not a big fan of lettuce and at times it goes wilty in the fridge. So I have another use for it.

Little oil for cooking

1 small onion, chopped

2-3 garlic cloves, chopped

1 teas. butter (optional)

1 large head romaine or leaf lettuce chopped

1 cup fresh or frozen peas

2 c low-sodium chicken stock

1/2 t. sugar

1/4 c. no/low fat sour cream (optional) but tasty

2 tbsp Fresh mint, chopped (optional)

In a large saucepan, heat a drizzle of oil over medium-high heat. Add onions, garlic and butter, and saute for 5 to 7 minutes, until the onions are soft. Add lettuce and stir until it wilts. Add the stock, peas, and sugar, and bring the soup to a simmer. Cook it for 15 minutes, then remove it from the heat and add sour cream and mint. Puree the soup until smooth using a hand blender or a regular blender (my choice). Serve hot, or cool completely, then chill and serve cold.

It would be great served with grilled or poached fish. To make it a bit more fancier – put finished soup through a sieve, fish in the centre and garnished with fresh mint. Great spa meal!

Is it wrong to have a glass of white wine with this recipe during my cleansing time?

Cheers, I mean bye for now,

Karen

Since I am in my new location for a week in Spain, I have
very limited internet, no TV, and it gets dark at 6pm and light at 8am. So much
time. I have been reading and cooking but must say it hasn’t been easy doing
very little. And had too much time getting into my head with thoughts of this
last year of forced change for me. Are we an entertainment-seeking nation but
not necessarily a pleasure-seeking one? We spend billions to keep ourselves
amused with everything from theme parks to shopping, but it’s not exactly the
same as quiet enjoyment. We work harder and longer and more stressful hours
than anyone in the world today. But do we like it? Alarming statistics say we
do. We are more happy and fulfilled in our offices (and home offices) than in
our own homes. Then of course the
inevitable happens, we get burnt out and have to spend the whole weekend in our
pajamas, staring at the TV a mild coma. So do we really know how to do nothing?
Food for thought.

Take Care,

Karen

Have you often wondered when you travel or move to a new place either you like it and fit in or you are just putting in time until you leave? In the book, Eat,Prey,Love There is an interesting conversation that looks at this. “Every city has a single word that defines it, that identifies most people that live there. If you could read people’s thoughts as they were passing you on the streets of any given place, you would discover that most of them are thinking the same thoughts. Whatever that majority thought might be-that is the word of the city. And if your personal word does not match the word of the city, then you don’t belong there.”

Let’s look at this in business or your organization. Is there is a word that people think of or that your organization emanates? If so, does it match up with the image you want your business to portray?

Food for thought,

Well the first few days in Morocco have been very interesting.
We started in Marrakesh. It is always a bit of a culture change to be thrown
into a Muslin country. We are awoken every morning at 5:34am to the pre-dawn
call to prayer. Muslins are called to prayer 5 times in a day. On our second day we decided to run around
the old wall of the city (around the medina).

Who knew it was over 20km? Apparently not us, locals kept
cheering us on in French. It’s funny, we are constantly hassled in the souks to
buy things from the locals. We have been approached approximately 10 times in
the evening to buy hash. We also didn’t know it is the hash capital of the
world, thanks to the foreigners. Our guide books even tell us how to buy it
safely. Wild. But when you are outside
these areas the locals are not aggressive at all. I also think that they are
just plain surprised to see 2 women running without burkas. I was told years
ago by a carpet salesperson in southern Turkey, that no matter what country you live in the
‘dregs of society’ will gather around an area of high tourism. Same, same all
over the world. Out of the big city now, the journey continues….

1. Stay in an apartment.

Websites such as www.vrbo.com,
www.booking.com and www.sabbaticalhome.com are great
websites to find apartments anywhere in the world. Having a kitchen even if
it’s small allows you to have a space to have meals, even if it’s only
breakfast.

2. Go for the set menus, at lunch.

Not only is this a great money saver it also allows you to
have a large meal at lunch. We just had a 3 course lunch in Barcelona for 10
Euro. That included bread and wine and in Barcelona lunch is 1 – 4pm so eating
at 4pm was like an early dinner to us.

3.Go to the
local supermarket and/or farmers market.

Not only will you get to see what the locals eat you can
stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget about the cheese (when in
Europe). Even in third world countries fruits and vegetables with skins are
fine. Pick up staples like cereal bars, quick snacks , etc.

4.Take a
few things from home.

I love peanut butter on bread first thing in the morning.
Because in many countries they don’t have PB, I bring mine from home. I have
never been in any country that didn’t make their own wonderful bread.

5. I’ve said it again and again, eat in
moderation

Many countries have great regional food. Just use common
sense and don’t eat too much.

6. Watch the drink calories.

Those creamy drinks with straws in them are delicious but
ingredients such as coconut milk can add a lot of extra calories in your day.
Also be aware of too much juice, again, secret extra calories. I myself like
wine and maybe a mojito.

7. Walk, walk, walk

It’s no surprise that Europeans are healthier than us. They
walk everywhere, especially in cities. Walking is the best and easiest form of
exercise. It is especially great after a meal.

Travel safe and stay healthy!

Karen
